Passing on the gift of a safe, personal birth
YUI Clinic in Okinawa has launched a fundraising campaign to build a new clinic wing, and we are asking for your support. Our Japanese campaign runs on CAMPFIRE until December 14, 2026. For friends who do not read Japanese, we have prepared this English page and a simple way to donate online by card through Stripe.
“Yui” is an Okinawan word meaning people coming together to help and support one another. Since opening in November 2011, we have welcomed about 2,500 babies (as of July 2026), and we hope to keep offering families the same sense of safety for many years to come.
Why we are building a new wing
Our current building has reached its limit. Waiting areas are crowded, and on some days expectant mothers have to wait a long time for their checkups. The new wing will give families more room and more choice:
- More delivery rooms and LDRs (labor, delivery, and recovery rooms)
- A larger pediatric clinic, expanding from vaccinations to general pediatric care
- Spacious private rooms where families can stay together
- More space for outpatient visits and breastfeeding (lactation) care
- Up-to-date medical equipment
Construction was initially budgeted at 750 million yen. Rising material prices, the weakening of the yen, and global inflation added about 160 million yen to the cost. We reduced the cost by about 50 million yen by revising the design. Through this campaign, we hope to raise the remaining 50 million yen needed to begin construction.
As maternity clinics close across Japan, our director, Dr. Fumi Shimabukuro, puts it simply: stopping now would mean putting out one of the lights of childbirth care in our community. We want every baby born here to feel, “I’m glad I was born.”
